The Greater St Lucia Wetland Park was chosen as the first South African World Heritage Site in 1999. The park has a unique position boasting many distinctive characteristics such as the largest black rhino population in the world, a total of five different species of marine turtle, 220km of coastline and pristine beach, an incredible biodiversity and much more. It is in The Greater St Lucia Wetland Park that Bhangazi Horse Safaris provide the adventure of a lifetime. These mobile tented horseback safaris operate in the wilderness areas of this vast expanse providing you the visitor with an unforgettable experience.
Game viewing from horseback just feels so right. Somehow the animals are far less disturbed than they would be by other traditional methods of game viewing. The animals often pay the horseback safari scant attention and so you are able to watch African wildlife behaving naturally. At times they seem to engage the horses and riders in play galloping alongside the group. It is a truly marvellous experience and one that will be remembered long afterward.
This Privately Guided Horse Riding Safari is a true wilderness experience, not easy to find in the world today. The accommodation is in mobile tented camps like the safaris of old, erected, moved and finally dismantled specifically for your safari. The horseback safaris are tailor made to suit each group with the rides usually longer in the cool of the morning, and then back to camp for lunch and a siesta followed by either a short ride or another activity such as a trip to the beach. A fully qualified guide leads the safaris with a backup rider; each safari has a minimum of 2 and maximum of 6 riders. Non-riders are also welcomed and there are plenty of other activities to choose from. The horses are mostly a local breed called Boerperd who are known for kind nature, strength and reliability as well as some Thoroughbred cross horses.
Choose between the True Safari in luxury style tents and the Adventure Safari in large bow tents. Your mobile camp is erected and awaits you in your own little corner of Africa as you ride into camp at twilight. A six night stay is preferable as this ensures enough time to move camp into a second area to be explored. Shorter safaris can be arranged. Come feel the wind in your hair as you canter alongside a herd of antelope in a world heritage site.
The True Safari is a completely luxurious horseback safari. Guests stay in colonial style tents with their own veranda. Each tent has an en-suite bathroom with a hot bucket shower supplied whenever wanted and a chemical toilet for use at night. Beds are made up with beautiful cotton sheets, piles of pillows and soft duvets. Dinner is served under the stars at a table set with white linen, silver and crystal. Meals are world-class standard, encompassing fresh produce from the local area; seafood is often included on the menu. All drinks and wines are included.
The Adventure Safari is a semi participation safari, basic but comfortable with the guests usually helping with the horses. The accommodation is in large dome tents with beds and duvets, linen and towels provided. Good but simple meals are served although guests are required to supply their own drinks.
Nelson Mandela who strongly advocated the World Heritage Site status of The Greater St Lucia Wetland Park remarked that The Park must be the only place on the globe where the worlds oldest land mammal (Rhino) and the biggest terrestrial mammal (Elephant) share an ecosystem with the worlds oldest fish (Coelacanth) and the worlds biggest marine mammal (Whale).
